The Montreal premiere of the acclaimed “What About Me: The Rise of The Nihilist Spasm Band” and the North American premiere of the fascinating “Looking for Reynols”.

The Nihilist Spasm Band are known as the world’s oldest noise band. Formed in London, Ontario in 1965, the band has released a number of recordings and retains a cult following around the world. They are still active. (website)

Reynols hail from Buenos Aires, Argentina and are known as the world’s only band to be fronted by a person afflicted with Down syndrome. The group was formed by Miguel, a creative and energetic savant with an uncanny knack for creating haunting improvised chaos. Reynols recently disbanded. (website)

Nihilist Spasm bass player dies The bass player with the Nihilist Spasm Band, a London noise music ensemble with fans around the world, has died at the age of 68. Hugh McIntyre died at a London hospital on Monday after a short illness.

After forming in 1965, the Spasm Band has played homemade instruments and avoided any musical training that might compromise its chaotic and joyful sounds over four decades.

McIntyre, a jazz fan, was seen as the Spasm Band member with the steadiest concept of a beat. He was proud of the praise he won from an Argentine band, Reynols. "(They say) there are only two bass players in the world . . . they like (jazz legend) Charlie Mingus and they like me," he said.

A retired librarian, McIntyre was one of the founding members of the band and was featured on the cover of its first album, recorded in 1968. His last appearance with the band was at its regular Monday gig at the Dissent club, 210 Dundas St., on Nov. 8. On that night, the band was joined by members of U.S. rock band R.E.M. for a jam session that stretched into the wee hours of the next day. R.E.M. played a concert at the John Labatt Centre on Nov. 9.

The Spasm Band is to continue playing. Other longtime members are Londoners Bill Exley, Art Pratten and John Clement and Canadian artist John Boyle.

Born in 1936, McIntyre grew up in St. Thomas and attended Western in the 1950s. He was active in the London arts scene from the 1950s on.

He was a writer for 20 Cents Magazine and other publications and in his full-time work as a librarian, McIntyre selected and screened many classic films for audiences and helped build the public library’s film collection.

A memorial service will be held Monday (Dec. 13th, 2004) at the Millard George funeral home, 60 Ridout St. S., at 7 p.m.
